In transit

THE BIG DAY IS FINALLY HERE!

I'm sitting in the Halifax airport as I type this. I went through customs, so I'm pretty sure I'm technically considering on American soil, but who knows?

I've been so busy leading up to the big day that I haven't had any time to think, let alone write this blog. I'm sure the first little while in England will be the same way, but eventually I'll get into some sort of groove and be able to update this thing pretty regularly.

The last time I flew, all of these new restrictions and security measures weren't in place, so I was pretty nervous going through security and customs.

My grandmother helped me pack my luggage, using some of her 'I lived through a war in Europe' magic. She managed to get my entire wardrobe into one suitcase, no small feat. I'm sure Kaeli will back me up on this one. :) Of course, it wasn't without some grandmother-y logic. She kept saying things like, "Oh, hand me that skirt... If you can call that a skirt."

THEN, the next day she calls my mother all concerned, "Does Jade wear underwear? I didn't pack any! I think she should be wearing underwear." Hahahaha. She sat on my underwear and socks at one point, I kept them by the suitcase but didn't let her go through them and pack them. I did that last night on my own.

My medicine took up half a tiny suitcase, which I packed in another, larger suitcase. So, with my entire wardrobe in one suitcase, and a suitcase in a suitcase, it really shouldn't surprise anyone when I say that my suitcases ended up with heavy tags. One was 53 pounds, and the other was 69 pounds. Just under the alloted the weight, so everyone can breathe a huge sigh of relief... No extra fees for me!

Security was a breeze. Of course, I was tagged for additional security. I didn't wear socks, so I was gingerly tip toeing through, hoping the nasty carpet and random car mat things didn't carry any diseases. I'll let you know if my toes start falling off. Anyway, extra security means getting a full body scan, and then letting some guy wand your bags. He asked me if I had anything sharp, and I was all, "Well, there's my Epi-Pen..." But, luckily, that was okay! We'll see how things go at the next security stop. Because American Airlines can't give me my boarding passes for my other two flights, I have to leave the inner sanctum and get the passes then do security again. I'm sure New York will be a lot tougher, but we'll see!

Customs was hilarious. The officer called me a nice young lady, and went on and on about how Iceland doesn't like outsiders... Just like Nova Scotia. At least he wasn't too surly and unfriendly! Although, maybe if I was an Icelander it would have been a different story!

Anyway, I'll try to update again in a few days... Or a few hours, depending on whether or not JFK Internet is free!
